Onondaga Camp

Summer 2020 Update

Message from Director, Duncan Robertson

Letter from Director, Duncan Robertson

Dear Onondaga Camp Families,

What an extraordinary time it is that we live in today. I hope that your family is healthy and safe and keeping well despite all that is going on around us.

It is with the heaviest of hearts that I am writing to you today.  The Government of Ontario has made the unprecedented decision to close all summer camps for the foreseeable future.  Because of this, Onondaga Camp has no choice but to cancel all of our Summer Programs for 2020.

For so many of us, Onondaga Camp is our home away from home.  Not only is camp the place to reunite with friends and immerse ourselves in the wonders of outdoor adventure, it is a place where we can truly be ourselves, step outside of our comfort zones and be wholly loved and respected for who we are.  To not be able to provide that safe, fun haven for our campers this summer is heartbreaking.  Believe me when I say, I feel this loss of summer acutely and wish more than anything we could have welcomed our campers back to Onondaga Camp this year.

Onondaga Camp will be refunding families 100% of all fees paid, including the non-refundable administration fee.  As a small business, we understand the impact that the pandemic has had on all of us.  An email specific to your family’s fees and refunded amount will follow in the coming days.

Camp is about connections and community.  It is our intention to help cultivate and further those connections to the best of our ability, both through this summer and into the year ahead.  We look forward to sharing those initiatives with you very soon.

This is most certainly a difficult time.  Onondaga Camp is celebrating our 103rd anniversary this summer. The camp has run every summer since 1918, through wars, recessions and depressions.  Onondaga Camp’s motto is “Carry On.”  Carry On meaning to “stay the course…” to “continue on – especially in spite of hindrance or discouragement…” It is hard to imagine that Onondaga – brimming with exciting activities, buzzing tentline, stunning sunsets, dining hall meals full of songs and cheers and beautiful West Point views – will sit idle this summer.  Yet, despite these feelings of devastation, we must carry on by focusing on staying healthy and safe so that we can be together on the shores of Middle Bob Lake next summer.

In the event that the Province lifts or loosens the current restrictions, we will investigate running the summer programs, but only within the parameters of being able to deliver such programs safely and feasibly.

Thank you to everyone for your loyalty and support.  It is extremely important to us.  We look forward to speaking with all of you very soon.

Take good care and Carry On,

Duncan

My camper was supposed to be an LIT 1 - what happens now?

We are currently exploring a number of remote learning opportunities with a goal to re-create virtually, as much of the LIT experience as possible.  We want to create an experience that is meaningful, personalized, engaging, relational, social and overall, “CAMPY!” We recognize that nothing can replace the actual experience of being in person together at camp…but we are going to do our best to provide you with something as positive and worthwhile as possible.

When will registration open for 2021?

We will be opening registration for the Summer of 2021 towards the middle of June for campers who were registered in 2020.

Is there a chance camp will operate in August?

In the event that the Province lifts or loosens the current restrictions, we will investigate running the summer programs, but only within the parameters of being able to deliver such programs safely and feasibly.

Will you be offering online programs in the summer if camp remains closed?

It is our intention to help cultivate and further the connections with camp and our community to the best of our ability, both through the summer and into the year ahead.  We hope to share those initiatives with you very soon.
